Who: Tech Trek at SWOSU serves female students going into the eighth grade and who reside in Oklahoma – it was created so young women like you could experience Science, Technology, Engineering and Math (STEM) in fun and unique ways.
What: : Tech Trek is a collaboration among the National American Association of University Women (AAUW), local AAUW members, and universities and colleges across the nation, such as Southwestern Oklahoma State University (SWOSU).
When: Tech Trek at SWOSU is a week-long summer camp that will run from July 16-22, 2017. Look under Forms for important camp deadlines to be nominated and to apply for this camp.
Where: Tech Trek at SWOSU will take place on the Southwestern Oklahoma State University campus in Weatherford, OK, which is approximately 70 miles west of OKC on I-40.
Why: Tech Trek is designed to create interest, education, and self-confidence in STEM in female students entering the eighth grade – this grade has been identified as being a challenging time when young women begin to identify career aspirations and take advanced coursework, but face peer pressures which may counter their true interests and motivation.
How: After being nominated by a teacher, submitting a camp application, and undergoing a short “get-to-know-you” phone interview, forty campers will be selected. Tech Trek at SWOSU only costs $50 to reserve a spot in camp, thanks to the support of AAUW, SWOSU, and other contributors (see Sponsors).
History: : Tech Trek has been in existence in California since 1998 – it has been a huge success, serving over 11,000 girls across eight college campuses in that state and still going strong! In 2012, the National AAUW in cooperation with the California AAUW decided to expand Tech Trek nationwide. Members of the AAUW Weatherford branch, in partnership with SWOSU, were chosen to host one of four pilot Tech Trek camp sites outside of California.
In July 2013, the inaugural Tech Trek camp was hosted by SWOSU – thirty campers attended the week long camp filled with classes, activities, and many fun and educational events. In 2014, SWOSU was once again chosen to host a Tech Trek camp. That year, 47 campers were in attendance for another week of great success. SWOSU will once again host Tech Trek in 2015 and 2016, hosting 44 campers each year. We are looking for up to forty-five young women to attend camp during our fifth year anniversary in July 2017.
